We support the advancment of artificial reef systems, coral propagation and fish/invert breeding.
To reduce the numbers taken from the wild in the short term, and provide a potential haven for an ever increasing number of species threatened by global environmental changes. Changes that may eventually destroy our natural coral reefs.

Tunze Wavebox review, preliminary testing finishedTunze Wavebox

"The easiest analogy to help get our heads around the functioning of the Tunze Wavebox is to think about what happened when you got into a bath as a child."

"...well built, with pleasing attention to detail. Making use of the tried and tested Tunze Stream pump technology. It produces a natural looking wave effect, in an energy efficient manner..."

"Tunze does unfortunately appear to have problems with some wavebox units suffering electrical failure"

Latest news: Tunze responds to our concerns over Wavebox power supply failure with news of a recent redesign.

Tunze USA     "We completely changed the wavebox pump in July of 2007, only older pumps have this large bulky transformer.  The old transformer has a safety shut off switch but the temp of shut off is high enough to cause some plastic deformation.  New pumps use a laptop power supply which shuts off at a much lower temp."

The Solaris LED lighting system coming to the end of it's test periodSolaris LED lighting pendant

Preliminary tests show good power savings. Some of this saving appears to be due to a vastly reduced heating effect, compared to metal halides, resulting in a cooler house and an almost redundant aquarium cooling system. Now is the time to write in (via an email with subject Solaris) with questions you would like us to put to Solaris, I will be talking to the company in May. The full review will be ready a few weeks after this.

Aquamedic's plankton reactors, testing now under way
Phyto Reactor

They are well known for producing high quality equipment, and so far I have been extremely impressed with the build quality and function of both the light reactor and zooplankton reactor. You can read my initial impressions here.

The first batch of live algae is growing well (and very fast) using Gillards f/2 Formula.

This review has been made possible with the kind support of Wickford Aquatics (UK), for the light reactor and Bromley Aquatics and Reptiles (UK) for the Zooplankton reactor

Factors affecting Algae growth in the Reef Aquarium

Algae is a normal part of a reef aquarium. In fact it is an important source of food for both fish and inverts that make up the mini ecosystem that we enjoy so much.

Predation usually keeps the algae in check, problems only occur when favorable conditions enable the algae to grow at a rate that exceeds its consumption.
So the question is when you do get an algae problem, what is it that is giving the algae an advantage. For this we need to look at... . .
